"We already have chips that are actually designed completely end to end in India and we are shipping those globally," Savi Soin, president of Qualcomm India, told CNBC. "We have a lot of engineers here doing end-to-end chip design." An integral part of the semiconductor manufacturing process, chip design defines the requirements for the chip's architecture and system, as well as how individual circuits will be laid out on the chip. Local media reported in January that Qualcomm is expanding its Chennai operations with a new design center focusing on wireless technology.

India wants to be among the world's top five semiconductor producers in the next five years, said Ashwini Vaishnaw, minister of electronics and information technology, railways and communications. The chip industry "is a very complex market, and global value chains and global supply chains are extremely complex in the current context," Vaishnaw said on CNBC's Street Signs Asia on Friday. As of December, Taiwan holds about 46% of global semiconductor foundry capacity, followed by China (26%), South Korea (12%), the U.S. (6%) and Japan (2%), according to market intelligence firm TrendForce. CHENNAI, Nov 6 (Reuters) - India's Redington (REDI.NS) reported a 22% decline in quarterly profit on Monday, as the technology gadgets distributor grappled with a global slowdown in demand and higher expenses. Consolidated profit fell to 3.03 billion rupees ($36.42 million) in the second quarter from 3.87 billion rupees a year earlier. In the previous four quarters, Redington had reported revenue growth between 24.6% and 30.8%. However, Qualcomm and Apple recently indicated smartphone sales slump has finally started to ease, setting them up for better quarters ahead.
